Treharris Mini and Junior RFC

Now that you’ve worked out where we are, we look forward to seeing you return to the site in the future.

Treharris is a small village in a former coal mining area at the base of the Merthyr Tydfil valley.  We are an integral part of the Treharris Rugby Club set up and hopefully producing a new crop of players who will be able to wear the senior club colours.

The Mini and Junior section was formed in 1994 by a small group of local parents who were concerned by the lack of playing facilities in the area.  They wanted to provide their children and village with some form of sporting recreation.  This group laid solid foundations for the club for it to grow to it’s current strength of 7 teams (season 2006-07) who’s ages range between Under 8’s to Under 16’s with a full fixture list for each one.  Each team has the support of WRU qualified coaches, qualified First Aiders, plus Team Managers which would have been a dream to the founding parents.

Also, the club facilities have developed in it’s short life.  Originally, all home fixtures were played at Treharris Park.  However, in the 2002-03 season we moved to our new facilities at Millennium Park on the site of the former Deep Navigation Colliery.  We now boast a new playing field, floodlit training facility and arguably, the best changing room set up in the Principality.  New developments are continuing.  Training normally takes place weekly and new players of any standard are obviously always welcome.

In addition to playing rugby, the Club has an enviable social structure.  The following rugby and social events took place in recent seasons, and we have every intention of repeating them in the future:-

· Club tours to various parts of the UK

· Rugby Festivals

· Hosts to several clubs from around the UK

· Players awards evenings

· Parents social evenings

· Christmas parties

· Parents and sponsors Christmas Dinner and dance

· Halloween fancy dress parties

· Dragon Sports Fun day, BBQs and It's A Knockout

· Outings to the Millennium Stadium to watch Pontypridd RFC and Wales

· Pontypridd Round Table fireworks display

· Darts competitions, bucket collections and other fund raising activities

In recent years the club has been included on the Sports Council for Wales ‘Club Cymru’ scheme as the representative club for the Merthyr Borough.  This scheme enables us to access grants for new training equipment, development etc.  Also, the Club has strong links with the Sports Council’s ‘Dragons Sport’ initiative in which several coaches have gone through the Dragons Sports training programme.

The Website provides information about all of our teams including match results, photographs etc as well as an archive page of seasons past.  Keep checking our News  page for events notices and other club issues.  Any comments, suggestions etc will be much appreciated.  Please use our Guestbook and E-mail facilities to post your comments and views about our site and anything related to rugby and community issues.  Or you may wish to contact one of the officials direct.

I would like to thank everybody associated with the club for all their dedication and hard work for bringing us this far.  I would especially like to thank the players for turning up in all weathers and making the effort worthwhile.  All the best for the future – you deserve it!

Finally, if there are any local young people (8-18, girls and boys) who would like the opportunity to have a go at playing rugby or would like to join a warm, friendly club, please contact us by E-Mail or come along to  training one evening.

Best wishes

Steve Williams (Chair)
